About the Lecture

The term endurance suggests that the body has the ability to perform for an extended period of time, however, this is not always the case. In this talk, the meaning of endurance and its slippery relationship to time/duration is explored in the work of body artists that includes Olga de Soto, Adam York and Gillian Jane Lees, Cassils and S.J. Norman, Kris Grey, Alastair MacLennan, Marilyn Arsem, Jason Lim, and He Yungchang. In honour of the theme of rest as resistance that has linked the four festivals that are connected by Time for Live Art, the lecture will explore the theme of rest as a type of endurance that requires time and attention, particularly when that rest is politically changed. I will also be looking at artists and activists who lie down, from the lunch counter protests during the Civil Rights period in the U.S. to artists who either lie down where they are not supposed to or who encourage others to lie down.
